Water vapor is continuously evaporated from the earth's land and water surfaces. Water present in soils is extracted by plants through transpiration and results in the release of water vapor into the atmosphere. The combined process is called evapotranspiration. Regional and global variation in evapotranspiration have an affect on the environment that directly impacts people, e.g. climate change, agricultural productivity, the water budget of semi-arid regions, and the rate of increase in pathogens and insect populations.

Satellite remote sensing provides data for the calculation of evapotranspiration on regional and global scales on a regular basis.

Satellite sensor measurements of the earth’s surface at visible and infrared wavelengths are combined with surface observations of wind speed, air temperature , and air humidity to calculate the moisture exchange between the surface and the lower atmosphere.

Evapotranspiration varies during the day usually reaching a maximum at midday.

The surface temperatures to be observed by ASTER result from the energy balance at the surface. Thus they may provide a tool for estimating components of the surface energy balance.
