Palm Islands, Dubai

 (JPG) Palm Islands, Dubai (1,028,610 bytes) ( 3,072 x 3,797 )
Artificial islands shaped like a palm tree are now being built as resorts. Three big palm islands and other private small islands are emerging in the Persian Gulf in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. These palm islands are called Palm Jebel Ali, Palm Jumeirah and Palm Deira respectively from the south to the north. Among the three islands, the biggest palm island, Palm Deira, was just being started when this image was taken. The small artificial islands are being marketed for private ownership, and are called The World, consisting of 250-300 small islands in the shape of a world map. The ASTER image was acquired on September 18, 2006, is centered near 25.3 degrees north latitude, 55.3 degrees east longitude, and covers an area of 46.1 x 57 km.
